The second son of Paigambar Bux Khan and Mitthanbai, Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916, in the town of Dumraon, British India, into a family of traditional Muslim musicians. His two grandfathers, Ustad Salar Hussain Khan and Rasool Bux Khan, were also musicians in the Dumraon palace. To rhyme with the name of his older brother Shamsuddin, he was given the name Qamruddin at birth.
