The second son of Paigambar Bux Khan and Mitthanbai, Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916, in the town of Dumraon, British India, into a family of traditional Muslim musicians. For Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon Estate in Bihar, his father was a court musician. His two grandfathers, Ustad Salar Hussain Khan and Rasool Bux Khan, were also musicians in the Dumraon palace. To rhyme with the name of his older brother Shamsuddin, he was given the name Qamruddin at birth. He is said to have cried “Bismillah,” or “In the name of Allah,” when his grandpa Rasool Baksh Khan, a shehnai singer himself, first saw the infant. As a result, he became renowned by this moniker.
